You Do Have Time: Turning Daily Routines into Healing Practices
In a busy school, where it feels like every minute counts, finding time for self-care can seem impossible. However, incorporating simple, mindful practices into daily routines—such as hand washing—can transform mundane activities into moments of meditation and rejuvenation.
I often jokingly share that dry hands are proof of a dry attitude. Picture it: you rush to the restroom, wash your hands quickly, then rush back into your role of caring for others without taking time to give yourself the slightest care and kindness. The tense shoulders and dry hands prove it!
You owe it to yourself to soften into the day.
Here’s how you can turn something as simple as hand washing with a few deep breaths into a scientifically-sound healing practice.
It may sound small, but hand washing is something we all do multiple times a day—especially in a school setting. Instead of rushing through it, you can use it as a built-in pause, a moment to reconnect with yourself. Here's how:
1. Pause with Purpose
As you approach the sink, take a breath. Shift your awareness from whatever chaos just happened to the simple act of being right here, right now. Notice how your body feels. Drop your shoulders. Wiggle your toes. Just that little reset can work wonders.
2. Engage Your Senses
Turn on the water and listen. Feel it. Let your attention rest on the sound and sensation. Notice the soap's texture and scent. Let these sensory details pull you into the present moment.
3. Breathe with Intention
While lathering and rinsing, take a few deep breaths.
Inhale through your nose for a count of four… hold…
Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six.
Do this a few times. It’s a powerful tool, and it takes seconds.
4. Close with Care
As you dry your hands, keep your breath slow. Let this simple act symbolize a fresh start. If you use lotion, use it as a mini hand massage—something just for you. A few seconds of connection with your own body can be deeply grounding.
Scientific Benefits of Deep Breathing
Integrating deep breathing into routine activities like hand washing can significantly amplify the healing nature of these moments. The benefits of deep breathing are well-supported by scientific research:
1. Reduces Stress: Deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps counter the body's stress response. Regular practice can help reduce overall stress and anxiety levels, making it a powerful tool for us.
2. Improves Focus and Concentration: By increasing the supply of oxygen to your brain, deep breathing also aids in improving focus and concentration. This can be particularly beneficial during long school days that demand constant mental engagement.
3. Enhances Emotional Regulation: Deep breathing exercises have been shown to promote emotional regulation, helping to manage emotions such as frustration, anger, and anxiety. This can improve interactions with students and colleagues, fostering a more positive and supportive school environment.
4. Boosts Energy Levels: The increased oxygen intake from deep breathing can also help boost energy levels, combating fatigue and enhancing overall vitality. Our days can feel never-ending, so it's essential to keep our energy levels up.
5. Promotes Overall Health: Regular deep breathing can improve cardiovascular health, aid in digestion, and support immune function by reducing stress-related hormones and promoting relaxation.
Integrating Mindfulness into Your School Day
Encouraging our colleagues to engage in these simple practices can also foster a more mindful and health-conscious school environment.
Consider starting staff meetings with a minute of deep breathing or setting up signs in restrooms to remind everyone of the hand washing practice.
At my campus, I also place and maintain a variety of scented lotions in the staff restrooms to encourage my colleagues and myself to take a moment to moisturize and breathe deeply.
You could set up a similar station in your classroom, but be sure to offer a variety of scents and an unscented option, as smell triggers emotional reactions, and we have no way of knowing what scents could have a negative effect on a student.
These small steps can make a big impact on school culture.
Mindfulness doesn’t need elaborate setups or extra time carved out of busy schedules. By redefining everyday actions like hand washing as opportunities for self-care, we can significantly enhance our mental and physical health, recharging our minds, resetting our emotions, and return to shaping the future with renewed focus and energy.
This approach not only benefits individual teachers and administrators but also creates a ripple effect, enhancing the overall atmosphere of the school and promoting a culture of mindfulness and wellness for our students.
